Pseudoalteromonas Ferment Extract: The Antarctic Marine Science Behind Dr Sebagh's Prestige Formulations
The most technologically advanced active in the Dr Sebagh range doesn't come from a field or a forest. It comes from the Antarctic ocean — and it represents a distinct category of botanical: precision biofermentation of a marine microorganism adapted to survive one of the most hostile environments on Earth.
01 — The Organism
Where It Comes From
Pseudoalteromonas Antarctica NF3 is a marine microorganism found in the extreme conditions of Antarctic waters: sub-zero temperatures, intense UV radiation, high salinity, and hydrostatic pressure. To survive, it produces an array of protective glycoproteins — complex protein-carbohydrate molecules — that shield it from oxidative stress and cellular damage. These same glycoproteins, applied topically, deliver measurable protective and reparative effects in human skin. In the INCI list it appears as PSEUDOALTEROMONAS FERMENT EXTRACT.
Why Fermentation Is Not Simply Extraction
Conventional botanical extraction isolates compounds already present in a plant. Fermentation is a production process: the microorganism is cultivated under controlled conditions and the ferment medium — enriched with secreted glycoproteins — is harvested. Active compounds are produced fresh, at controlled concentration, with consistent bioavailability. It is closer to pharmaceutical manufacturing than pressing an oil, which is why the results are reproducible and the ingredient commands its position at the top of the range.
02 — The Science
What the Ferment Does to Skin
- Skin density and firmness — Clinical studies show measurable improvements in skin density and reduction in visible wrinkling, attributed to stimulation of extracellular matrix proteins in the dermis.
- Hydration retention — The glycoprotein structure enhances the skin's own moisture-binding capacity, improving hydration at multiple depths.
- Environmental stress protection — The organism's adaptation to UV and oxidative extremes translates directly to skin protection against the same stressors that accelerate photoaging.
- Cellular repair support — The extract supports the skin's endogenous repair mechanisms at the dermal level — relevant for daily environmental damage and for recovery after professional treatments.
"A marine organism adapted to survive Antarctic extremes produces glycoproteins with precisely the properties needed to protect and repair human skin from environmental aging."
03 — The Second Strain
Alteromonas Ferment Extract
The Dr Sebagh range also uses Alteromonas macleodii subsp. — a related but distinct marine strain producing a different bioactive profile through its own fermentation process. In the Luminous Glow Cream, Alteromonas ferment is combined with Candida saitoana ferment extract for a compounded approach to visible radiance. In the Instant Fix Eye Lift Gel, it delivers an immediate visible lifting effect around the eye contour — fast-acting rather than cumulative, making it the choice before an event.
